Why alcohol harms coated lenses
Modern glasses are not just glass or plastic. They carry thin functional layers: an anti-reflective coating, a hydrophobic (water-repelling) top layer, and often a blue-light or scratch-resistant coating. These coatings are only a few microns thick, and solvents dissolve them faster than they dissolve the lens underneath.
Isopropyl alcohol and ammonia are the ingredients most likely to degrade modern lens coatings over time. As an optical technician, the most common damage I see is not scratches. It is coatings that have gone cloudy, crazed, or peeled because someone used a cheap alcohol spray or a household glass cleaner for months.
Household glass cleaners like Windex contain ammonia and should never be used on coated glasses. They are designed for uncoated window glass, not micron-thin optical coatings.
What is safe to clean glasses with
- An alcohol-free, ammonia-free lens spray is the safest everyday option for coated lenses.
- Lukewarm water with a tiny amount of washing-up liquid, then air-dry or a microfibre cloth.
- A clean microfibre cloth, never tissue, paper towel, or your shirt, which trap grit and scratch.

How to clean coated glasses without damaging them
- Rinse the lenses under lukewarm running water to float off dust and grit before you touch them.
- Apply an alcohol-free lens spray, or a drop of mild washing-up liquid, to each side of the lens.
- Wipe gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth in small circles until the lens is clear.
- Avoid heat. Never clean lenses with hot water or leave them on a car dashboard, as heat also damages coatings.
